4 Common Conditions Where Staying Hydrated May Help
August 19, 2026
Water is essential to nearly every process in the body, so it's tempting to credit it with curing all kinds of conditions. It doesn't - but for a few common, everyday issues, staying well-hydrated is a real, evidence-supported part of prevention and relief.
1. Constipation - Adequate fluid intake helps soften stool and supports regular bowel movements, particularly when combined with sufficient dietary fibre.
2. Kidney stones - Increasing daily fluid intake is one of the most well-established, guideline-recommended ways to reduce the risk of forming new kidney stones, by diluting the minerals that form them.
3. Headaches - Dehydration is a recognised trigger for some headaches, and rehydrating can ease them when fluid intake was the cause - though frequent or severe headaches have many other causes worth ruling out with a doctor.
4. Urinary tract infections - For women prone to recurrent UTIs, clinical research has found that increasing daily water intake meaningfully reduced how often UTIs recurred, likely because more frequent urination helps flush bacteria from the urinary tract.
None of this makes water a cure. It's supportive, not curative, and doesn't replace medical treatment for conditions that need it.
